» All About Chaos Legion on ActionTrip

The game is a mindless hack-and-slash, which is not necessarily a downside on its own. Still Diablo will remain the ultimate hack-and-slash, Tekken will remain the ultimate beat-em-up (that's what you think - DOA3 rules! - Ed), and Devil May Cry (which obviously inspired this game) is the ultimate dark paranoid experience. When Sieg defeats a level boss, he acquires powerful special moves and these crests allow him to summon his Legions... which brings us right back to the title, Chaos Legion. As you already realized (unless you are retarded, of course) Sieg can summon other units to help him fight the forces of darkness. These units (Legions) have their own specific characteristics and moves.

You can equip only two crests at once, and I guess that choosing the proper pair was supposed to be the strategic element in the game, as each of your little helpers has a type of enemy it is most effective against. Still, choosing the wrong ones doesn't make the game any different (unless there is a target that will take ranged units to shoot down). After each level Sieg gets experience points which he can use to upgrade his assistants. The game doesn't pose much of a challenge. Only the level bosses can give you a little trouble, and when I say a little, I mean - a little.

There are seven crests for the seven Legions in this game, and they are Guilt (Sword), Hatred (Power), Malice (Arrow), Arrogance (Shield), Flawed (Claw), Blasphemy (Bomb), and Thanatos (Ultimate). Thanatos is the Ultimate Legion which rules over all of them, and if you're wondering why you're given such a powerful Legion at the very beginning of the game, the answer is simple - because he is destroyed after the first stage, so you will have to collect all nine parts of his chip in order to have him as your ally once again. You will earn those other Legions during the game, and each will have its own specialties and powers. There are levels where you can play as Arcia, a member of the fabled Silver Maidens, whom Sieg meets along the way. She is proficient with guns, which should give you a new experience of the game (the experience can be described as "challenging", as she can never hit anything unless she stands still).

When you consider all this - disappointing game play in combination with disappointing graphics, the game leaves the bitter aftertaste of wasted money. I might have mentioned that the music was OK. It is actually quite typical for this kind of game; a Japanese attempt at creating plausible hard-rock. Quite lively, which does make the game seem more dynamic, but also in utter contrast with the atmosphere. This game could have been good, if it only had less clumsy controls and camera view, better graphics, and a substantially modified game play. I find all this sad as I grew up with Japanese games (and I like their androgynous, angsty heroes).

All in all, there is nothing that would distinguish this third-person action game from many others, and even less that could possibly maintain the players' attention. It is fun altogether, but only for a short while, until the player sees all this game has to offer... which is not much. Not only will you have no desire to play it again once you finished it, but you are also highly unlikely to be sufficiently motivated to finish it once, in the first place (and I have to reiterate: only if you are not Smapdey - Six). The only good use for this game is getting rid of the anxiety by slaughtering the creeps. But you can get that from practically any game on the market. Capcom obviously had a good idea, but they didn't execute it properly - at least as far as the PC iteration is concerned.
