These few inconsistencies in weapon design can also be applied to the game's rather lopsided difficulty. Once your character becomes sufficiently Biomoded it will be powerful enough to handle any type of situation with brawns instead of stealth. Through a good portion of the game the stealth option is completely unnecessary. As I said, things do get trickier near the end of the game, where a few stealthier approaches might be in order, but I just got a feeling that the difficulty balance was slightly off for the better part of the single-player. This wouldn't be too significant if it wasn't for the fact that it kind of limited the gameplay to a certain more aggressive and straightforward approach. Then again, I've played the game on the normal level of difficulty. I guess upping the difficulty setting should make things just right for those of you looking for more of a challenge. Furthermore, the mere fact that you'll want to explore your surroundings and "find a better way" will ensure that you never go through the entire game all guns blazing.
The AI code worked pretty well most of the time. Aside from a few minor path finding issues, it proved to be sufficiently environmentally aware and believable enough not to impede the consistency of the game world. Granted, the CPU opponents had a few more minor flaws in their behavior, but we aren't talking about anything that would lower the overall score or significantly influence my overall impression of the gameplay.
Finally, those of you who've played the demo are certainly already aware of the many visual discrepancies that were directly related to this game being largely optimized for the Xbox. On the other hand, when you turn off the Bloom effect, and max out the PC effects, the game can look pretty good. The fusion of the highly interactive game environment with solid lighting and dynamic shadows makes the game world seem gritty enough to convey the atmosphere of a gloomy post-apocalyptic life. As I said, with some proper visual tweaking the textures can be made to look sharp and the models will appear detailed and very realistic. Of course, the implementation of the rag doll physics and the excellent skeletal animation system only helps in those regards. The environments might at times look rather too simplistic, but the abovementioned effects ensure that the general impression remains fairly positive.
However, all this doesn't in the least bit justify the very steep hardware requirements. I played the game on a AMD 3GHz/Radeon 9700PRO (3.9 CATALYST)/1GB 400MHz RAM rig and was really frustrated on a couple of occasions by the extremely choppy frame rates. I had to turn off FSAA (Full Scene Anti-Aliasing), and play in the modest 1024x768 resolution, and the game still wouldn't run fine when all the other details were maxed out. Warren Spector commented on the system reqs in a post to the Ion Storm forums and said that the game requires a card with an extremely high fill rate. What this means is that, to be able to play this one in a truly high-resolution (say 1600x1200), you'd have to have a beast of a machine the likes of which cannot be purchased today. To top it all off, the game requires Pixel Shaders 1.1, an advanced 3D feature that's not even supported by the MX line of NVIDIA cards. I guess it's rather unfair that so many gamers running lower-end gaming systems would be left out to dry like that. Again, I'm suspecting this has something to do with the Xbox optimization as the Bloom effect, that's supposed to soften the edges of polygons and give lights a special glow, looks like it was primarily intended to look good in TV resolutions. Hence, the rather low-res appearance of the textures when this option is turned on.
My sentiments on the audio experience were largely positive. Certain sounds in the environment are properly accented to give a special sense of immersion to the player. Contrary to this, voice acting is rather inconsistent. The actors do a good job for the most part, but there were a few NPC's whose voices sounded very amateurish and flat. Another minor gripe I had with the audio has to do with the digital remastering of the voices. Often during conversation characters would make unnaturally long pauses between sentences. This kind of makes it obvious that the dialogue has been cut and pasted together. Usually this would happen when the character pauses during speech to highlight an important moment in the conversation. The musical soundtrack is excellently incorporated into the gameplay. It represents a mix of cyber punk and hard rock tunes and it's perfectly suited for the game's prevailing mood.
For better of worse, certain things about Deus Ex: Invisible War hold very true. The game has been optimized with consoles in mind. Then again, Ion Storm has to be commended for being able to pull off such a highly complicated project and for yet again pushing the limits of game design - in terms of story telling, the implementation of physics in regards to the gameplay, and the ability to create an illusion of choice for the player. From a PC gamer's standpoint, it's clear that Invisible War still has room for improvement - mostly in the technical department. It's hampered with a number of issues that originally wouldn't have existed if only the game was designed with the PC in mind. But even as it is, Deus Ex: Invisible War is an intelligent, mature and engrossing project that deserves the attention of every self-respecting shooter/adventure game fan out there. I would be a total hypocrite if I didn't award it for its strong points that I hold in such high regard.

| Good read 2Lions. Kept me from my work for 20 min. I was finally able to DL the demo this weekend, and I really do like it. Unfortunatly, there is one thing that it retained from the 1st one: Really clumsy combat. I love Deus Ex as much as the dead hooker (she said she was one, but she couldnt've been older than 11) in my closet, but like the 1st, when I shot someone I didnt get the feeling that they were being shot with a large caliber weapon. You pump shot after shot into their chest and they continue after you without so much as an "ow! quit it!" or even seem visually phased by you attack! It took a lot of the immersiveness out of it. Although when I lit people up with the flamethrower the sound was better than any porn I've watched. The screams were great of them burning to death...I've had to wash 3 pairs of pants just from listening to them burn. Die die die DIE! The interior graphics I thought were great and had a lot of subtle touches to really make it believeable. IE: the ceiling of the bar, the tables, the bleachers for the cock-fights or lizard things. The movement of the game via my mouse felt reallly strange too. The game defaults the mouse sensetivity to 50 which felt WAY to much so I dropped it to 20. Even then, it felt....odd. Almost as if I had a mouse mounted on an Xbox analog stick you could say. I know that sounds strange but it really didnt feel smooth (IE: Wolfenstein or any other A-List FPS). It wasnt due to low framerate either, which I do have using a GeForce3 and playing it at 800x600 res. I am totally disappointed with the omissions of most of the RPG elements and ALL of the shortcomings stated in 2Lions great review, but either way the game is still great. The best way to enjoy this game is to put Deus Ex out of your head. (C'mon, you can do it) |

| I'd like to be able to do that (put the previous game out of my head), but in this case that can't be done....Ion Storm took some of the best things of the original game, such as the complex menu systems and wide-open areas, and flat-out removed them.....and I think the graphics can be perfectly summed up by a statement in the review....the game is meant to be played on a television....everything is oversized and the lighting effects are blurry.... | ||

| I gave the game a higher score because it STILL is a very good game. Open-ended, mature, gripping storyline. It's hardly groundbreaking, but it's still VERY GOOD. I've finished the game and gone through all the multiple endings, so debating with me on whether or not it deserves the score it got is totally absurd in my humble opinion. No offense Speedy, of course. I'm just trying to keep an open mind here. | ||

| well, just tell those kids at the Ion Storm forums that the only crack he's smoking is the crack rock he bought from Harvey and the rest of the team that developed DX2:IW. Just kidding. I like the game neough just based on the demo and 2Lions review is totally fair. The problem is that everyone, Ion Storm included, was expecting Half-Life like reviews. |

| If the developers choose to go for the quick buck by riding the franchise wave then they'd better be ready to face the music if they fail to live up to the expectations said franchise carries with it. We weren't expecting a Half-Life game, we were expecting a Deus Ex game ... something that IonStorm has clearly failed to deliver. The open ended gameplay was only a minor part of what made Deus Ex so great. It was basically all the things that IonStorm chose to remove from the game in order to appease the illiterate console kiddies (sorry, I couldn't help myself), that made the original Deus Ex stand out (i.e. the RPG like elements, the skill system, etc). Is it so wrong to expect greatness of a sequel to one of the most brilliant games ever made? There are rumours right now about the possibility of Peter Jackson getting involved in a movie version of The Hobbit. If this comes to pass, wouldn't all of you expect a movie on par with the Lord of The Ring movies? I know I would and the same goes for Deus Ex: Invisible War. I don't care if the game is "pretty good", it is clearly a dumbed down version of the original and there are frankly plenty of other "pretty good" no brained FPS games out there. No thank you IonStorm, you can keep you console game for yourself :o( |

| As a reviewer I can't review games based on the things that weren't inlcluded. (i.e. this game doesn't have an elaborate RPG facet, therefore it sucks!) As it is, Deus Ex: IW is not as great as the original, and hence, it won't win any GOTY awards, but I'll be damned if I call this game bad, shitty, or whatever else angry hard-core fans are calling it these days. It's one of the better shooters I've played this year. | ||

| I agree with 2lions. Dont flame a game that you havent even played the full version yet. Because DX1 was so great, you ppl expected DX2 to be great too. It's just a game, and it looks pretty decent fps shooter. Now you see why pc game developers are leaning towards making more console games than pc, or porting games from consoles to pc, because haters like you going around saying how shitty this game is and so on. You have to give credit for these programmers who make these games and developed better games in the future. With these kind of bullshit negative comments, no wonder pc games become more like consoles. | ||

| I see your point completely fatbastard and you are so right in every reguard...from that end of the spectrum. Part of me says exactly what you are saying, to the "T". Then I swallow my dignity and accept what Ion Storm has given us as something that isn't all that bad and is worthwhile anyway. Your (fatbastard) analogy of Peter Jackson and the Hobbit really makes a GREAT argument though. When you have the same man working on the game (even though Warren was more of a consultant than designer of IW), you would EXPECT all of the elements that made the original great to be incorporated in the sequal...only it should be a steriods version with all of these facets strengthed and tuned. In the end, sadly enough, it is all about making the buck. Though Deus Ex 1 didnt top sales charts, I'm guessing the game probably sold well in the long run because many people, myself included, didnt pick the game up until a year after its release after hearing so many good things. Pure word of mouth game...this game didnt NEED to be dumbed down with such a large fanbase built around it. The amount of hype it generated in the past year insured it to sell by the truckload and I think that by simplifying the game it put a curve in a lot of reviews for the worse (if only by a little). IF DX2:IW was in fact what we expected it to be, reviews would've been through the roof and all the generated hype over the past year would've combined into creating huge sales numbers. Of course this is just speculation, but I like to think that there is some truth to it. Hey....it could've turned out like Freelancer! HAHAHA!!!! I'm not laughing cause it's funny. I'm laughing from because i went slightly insane after playing Diablo in space when I thought I was supposed to have a space sim. ok....not getting on that one. |

| Good review 2Lions, sucks thought that you and the other reviewers are getting reemed by the fans, but that was to be expected. They, like me, are never going to really enjoy IW, because we can't get the original out of our minds. And yes, IW has some good parts and overall is a good game, especially when it comes to the story. I was just sad to see that the devs thought the story would make the game and in my opinion it doesn't. The first time I played DX was for the story, but then I kept playing the game through doing basically everything the same. It wasn't for the story, heck I'll buy a $7 book for that, but the gameplay that was entertaining, and sadly a lot of that gameplay just doesn't feel like it did. I do have to say good job on staying how you felt about the game. Sometimes I feel like the reviewers just say what they think the majority of the audience wants to hear or make the game sound so much better than it really is. So thanks for stating it like it is, you guys always do that. And no, I'm not sucking up. |

| If this game was named something else that didn't hinted the game "deus ex" maybe it would've received much better among the reviewers and gameplayers alike. I think people would accept this game better as a stand alone title rather than a sequel. I'm a big fan of the first game and let's face it, we expect a sequel to be as good as the original with all that original was and then some. When they take out core elements of the original that makes it great in the first place of course people is going to complain! personally I hope some hardcore fan's gonna mod the game to make it more like the original where game play is concern. I think the developers really did had money in mind instead of the interest of its supporters. |

| I've been playing this game for 3 days now and i have to admit i am impressed. Never before have i seen a storyline so deep and engrossing. This whole game is an experience that noone should miss. What i dont get is how come people expect this game to be a clone of deus ex 1. Some people even expected the interface to be the same with DX1. Duh!Its been threee years. U just have to get over Deus ex and accept this game for what it is. It is a deus ex game, but not deus ex with fancier graphics. I shouldnt be the one telling u that! Think how many things changed in your lives for the past 3 years and tell me y did u expect a computergame to stay the same. Ion Storm created a unique game with Deus Ex and now has created another UNIQUE game with DX:IW. Hear that? It wouldnt be unique if it was similar to deus ex. And omg AI=stupid? Try playing it on hard or realistic and u will see who's the stupid one ;). I stood inside a vent waiting for a bot that spotted me to go away and guess what? Bot still thereI got bored of waiting and walked all the way back to try another route. And when i did that i only found the bot standing in front of the alternate entrance. I mean if u have experience with first person shooters DONT play this game at normal difficulty setting. Try hard/realistic. |

| I dunno if any1 mentioned this b4 (havent got time to read all the threads or posts), but maybe what IonStorm should have done to avoid all these negative feelings about DX2, was doing like many developers do nowadays: release a big buck console version and take time changing the game to better suite devoted DX fans and other FPS/RPG players. Fuck! I was so much looking foward to this game and when i got it (only in February 2004), i hadnt, and still havent, got the necessary hardware to play: GeForce 4 MX440. And even if i did im not sure i would have a very pleasent experience with my AMD Duron 1.0 Ghz. |
