» All About Dungeon Lords on ActionTrip

June 07, 2005
Uros "2Lions" Jojic

Dungeon Lords is a fantasy action RPG by D.W. Bradley. That's one way of putting it. Another way would be to say that Dungeon Lords is a very sinister and subtle way for the Illuminati to screw with our minds and make us go insane. Seriously, is gaming about enduring games or enjoying them? If it's about enduring games, then either D.W. Bradley or myself have to get a gold medal. I've endured for long enough, and he's made me suffer for it like a true champion of producing games that make you suffer like a 2nd century Christian.

After hours spent on this third-person action RPG, I have finally decided I could not endure it any longer, so I opted to use trainers and cheats. I thought, "Well, yeah, the game is frustrating as all hell, but I'll make myself very powerful and I'll breeze through it," right? Wrong. That didn't work either. The damn trainers cannot help the invalid that is my elf character.

The game is insanely difficult, with dozens of spawning monsters that will come at you from all possible angles, surrounding you and making you unable to run or hide. Once you die eventually, you will be able to resurrect with the press of the "R" key. However, this will come at the unfortunate expense of actually losing character stats. By the time I reached the first town, my character had something like -132 Strike and minus-one-hundred-something everything else, because I kept dying, of course, at the hands of the countless spawning goblins. But then why didn't I simply save my progress and load the game before I got killed? The designers must've thought this would be too easy, so they excluded a quick load option, making you actually exit the game and then load the position every time from the main screen.

The frustration of this decision can only be matched by the completely uninspired and confusing level design, which made me rue the day I ever started playing this game. I kept wandering through poorly lit hallways that seemed to have been cut and pasted to make one larger level map. And then imagine my frustration when at the end of the starting level, I couldn't even defeat a rat in one-on-one combat, let alone a huge battle troll. Yep, due to my unfortunate lack of l33t action RPG skills, I died a zillion times, lowering the stats of my character to, well, "below rat level" obviously.

I did manage to reach the town in the end by catching a few "lucky" breaks. Oh, yes... The enemy AI is so stupid that you can easily trick them into killing their buddies by simply making sure the melee fighters chasing you are in the way of the spell casters who are trying to fry your ass. Or you could lure them to a door and then activate the door lock; like sliding doors in shopping malls, the wooden doors will keep trying to close and at the same time, keep slamming into the unfortunate enemies trying to get through. The whole scene looks utterly stupid, but it's fun in a way. Often, the enemy would get stuck on doorframes too, at which point I would switch to my bow and arrow and stick arrows in them until they were dead. Priceless AI.

The only problem, of course, was that my character's stats were now horribly low, and when I would finally level, I would actually get a chance to improve those stats, bringing them up to like a fraction of what they were at the start of the game. Ironically, and partially because of the way I played it (blame it on my dumb ass if you like), Dungeon Lords is the only RPG that I know of that actually makes your character lousier as you progress through the game. The idea itself was possibly not that moronic, but the way that the whole thing plays out, and bearing in mind the idiotic way in which you need to load the saved games, it's just frustrating beyond belief for the player. Replaying the game so that you could get it right makes me cringe more than picturing Michael Moore naked.

I could even live with the stick figure animation of my character, and I might have forgiven the horribly tedious and confusing level design for the sake of an engaging storyline (which I never got to unravel, as I haven't played the game enough). However, the actual game mechanics were so poor and so alien to me that I felt like smashing my keyboard rather than playing on. I simply could not do it, people.

In a word, I hate this game. It is horrible crap. Stay away from it, and if you see it in the bargain bin, pour some gasoline over the bin and burn it. Who knows, you might burn some meaningless Sims expansions with it. Then again, The Sims are gaming heaven compared to the hell of playing Dungeon Lords. Avoid this game like the plague.

Hahaha, have you ever rated a game this low?

"lowering the stats of my character to, well, "below rat level" obviously." HAHAHAHA!

I pray that metacritic uses "I hate this game. It is horrible crap." as its AT comment.. hehe
  AzKicker@70.48.42.62: hahaha! They did!

Best game I've played in years. Possibly only topped by my other favorite game - pouring acid into my eyes.
daftshadow [mail] Jun 07 2005, 10:36 am EDT
I have never played an RPG without a minimap and this game was the first. I cannot tell you how long I was lost in the sewers. No minimap, dark as hell, damn spawning enemies, tedious paths, penalty on equipment, stupid chests explode, oh man there's so many BAD things about this game. Good thing I exchanged this game for another title, ugh!!!
skribb [mail] Jun 07 2005, 10:49 am EDT
LOL this is the lowest score EVER!
nasiraskar [mail] Jun 07 2005, 10:50 am EDT
Why give 10 give it a 100 like the one u gave to Pam Anderson VIP Game LOL
2lions [STAFF] [mail] Jun 07 2005, 10:54 am EDT
Well, I've probably played worse games, but not ones that were more frustrating. The only reason I gave it that score is to make it clear to the reader that he/she should not bother. Period.
King Speedy [mail] Jun 07 2005, 10:56 am EDT
so when's the expansion due?
Cheddar: Speedy is a prophet, apparently.

Wow. 10. About the only game I can think of that ranks that low is Mistmare.

Pity, too. D.W. Bradly ranks amongst the Holy Trinity, for me, of PC RPG makers (The others being Lord British and Van Canegm or however you spell his Canuuk-assed name of Might and Magic fame); I liked Wizards and Warriors, and I loved the Wizardry series. This game, though, is seriously unfinished. It doesn't even look like it went through beta testing; the character customization isn't there. There's just no option for it in the single player game - which blows chunks.

Then there was everything else.

The score could've been 20 or 30, but it still would've made no difference, as I said before, I chose ten to make sure no one buys this one.

I found it frustrating more than anything else, and there's no reason for people to go through the same type of aggrevation as I did.
NiteX [mail] Jun 07 2005, 06:18 pm EDT
So why did you guys choose to review this game again?
BadCRC [mail] Jun 07 2005, 06:29 pm EDT
Uh It's just AT's new score system ... It's 10/10 ya morons NOW GO AND BUY IT!
choybee [mail] Jun 07 2005, 07:29 pm EDT
aw c'mon... a 10??? i think this game deserves a higher score. you should've given it a chance. i think it deserves a 12.
Cheddar [mail] Jun 07 2005, 09:58 pm EDT
What I'm trying to figure out is how a few sites scored this game in the 60-70 range.

I just read GameZone's review, who rated it a 7.6 out of 10. I HEAVILY suspect the reviewer didn't even play the game. Read the review and you'll see what I mean. Several paragraphs read like its paraphrased straight from the game's own manual, not an article intended to make critical observations. It also blatantly lies about the character customization.....something that was advertised (evidently falsely) in previews, press releases, developer interviews, etc. and so forth.....but, again, wasn't actually in the shipped game. And that just further supports the assertion that GameZone's review is 100% bullshit and that the writer didn't actually play the game at all. I also like how GameZone's review goes on at length about the nice graphics, when in actuality the game runs on a quite dated 5 year old engine.

Methinks somebody got some under the table pay-off in exchange for a positive review......I'm leery of GameSpot as well, they gave it a 68.

I mean hell, even IGN gave it a scathing review, for christ's sake. You know, the people who give out 95+ scores like it's nothing.
iomakar [mail] Jun 07 2005, 11:24 pm EDT
this is truly the best game review i've read.

At least for me this game isn't too bad and I would have gave it a 60%.

1. I never got lost once like other people have said they have. (I got turned around once but it didn't take long to get going in the right direction)

2. The save and load actually take alot less time to save and load then alot of (so called) better games, so the little extra work to go to the main menu to save and load doesn't bother me very much.

3. I am not stupid enough too use the revive (since it's pretty obvious what it does) to bring my charecter back.

4. I make sure I don't use equipment that gives penalties and if I want to use certain equipment I make sure that my skill in that type is high enough too use it without incurring penalties.

5. Since I do this in every game I get (since I am not into the killing as much as just playing the game) I lower the difficulty to easy and since this game has an encounter rate I lower that to low and it isn't too difficult for me. ( I can actually play it alright at normal but I just don't like playing games too have a tough challenge but too have fun)

The only reasons why I don't give this game a higher score are that it has missing features and a couple of bugs that arn't too bad so far.

The charecter customization is a pretty minor thing since it is only too make your charecter look different and alot of really good games don't allow you too customize your charecter and are still good.

The map would only be useful too me in the forests since it can get a little hard to not get lost.

guenthar, to each his own. I can't possibly fathom the logic behind your statements, but I guess... you, uh, nope. No idea how you think this one deserves a 60/100, which would put it in the "Above Average" category.

speaking of screwed up AI, i remember those stupid guards chasing after you in Fargrove either running or walking by them. every single time. why are the towns so empty? why is it always dark, is there no sun?
Vortexien [mail] Jun 11 2005, 12:33 pm EDT
I would give this game 100%, it's wicked awsome, my download demo of the game is perfectly fine, i completed the demo with great satisfaction in the game. It's awsome. Btw are you people English as it's not released yet in England. Maybe when it comes out in England it would have tweaked those minor glitchs and bug with the game, what do you think?
telsa [mail] Jun 12 2005, 05:16 pm EDT
this game is truly the most terrible game i've ever seen! ok, 2nd. i will now name a few errors not mentioned.

1 when usin that blue sword thing it stays there when you take away the weapon and therefor looks stupid.

2 for some reason an error accured causing evry spell to be the exact same, this happened twice.

3 i was also able to leave the proper game area wich was really wierd.

4 vortexian is retarded. i know him in person. just ask him if you don't believe me. (the knowing him in person bit, not that he's reterded. altho the fact he liked the game should show that.)
