Resident Evil 4 is also very long, it comes on two disks, and on top of that, it will get some getting used to. I was no good at all when I started, and soon became proficient in not moving and shooting with accuracy.
![]() I'm telling you, I'm tired and I'm in no mood for a quickie! But that's no reason to blow me away! |
![]() You don't look too well. Here, let me help you. Slowly put this gun in your mouth... |
There are some bizarre parts to the game. The story can be somewhat hard to follow as characters seem to show up at random, and the backstory isn't very carefully explained. I noticed that sometimes after an enemy has their head blown off with a shotgun blast to the face, they would either continue to attack you until you hit them again, or they will wonder around for a bit before falling down. The weapon buying system is equally as warped. There's a guy running around the town with tons of guns, and he demands money from you to use them, even though the zombie people probably want to kill him too. It's an interesting way to allow you to upgrade your guns as well as promote an inventory and economy system in the game, but it still stands that it is a bizarre way to do it. Speaking of the inventory system, you have to do go into it to change guns. This is sort of frustrating, but there's only a slight pause in between the switch. However, having to stop the game to get a grenade out is a pain. As I mentioned though, there is only a slight pause in the switch. On top of that, and somewhat related to that fact, is the absence of any serious load times throughout the game.
It goes without saying that this isn't really a kid-friendly game, and it isn't passed off as one. It's nice to have a good adult themed title on the cube though, as fun as other kid-friendly games may be, sometimes you need to play something your own age. (So for Vince and me, that would be Yahtzee at the retirement home. - 2Lions)
This game has some of the best atmosphere of any game I've played in recent memory. Everything really builds into playing a really good horror film. Sure, it has some cliché moments, and parts of it can come off as ridiculous at times: Like why they only sent one guy in after the president's daughter, with no backup apart from two Spanish cops who die in the first five minutes. And despite the fact he has a radio that he can use to call in help, he never does. But all this aside, you'll really love Resident Evil 4 no matter who you are. The game is simply a work of art because of all the things it does right, and most importantly, because it brings the exact kind of gameplay experience the designers strived to achieve.
![]() 9.4 Excellent A seriously scary game with great atmosphere and some amazing features, a genre changing game; Some people might not like the "can't-move-and-fire" dynamic, inventory system breaks up gameplay. RATINGS GUIDE |
