As far as graphics go, it looks alright. We've been over this a thousand times, and say what you will, there's not a whole lot new here. Personally, the graphics don't bother me, and the environments are so huge that the draw distance more than makes up for any shortcomings you might find. This, however, is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm going to let you make your own mind up here. I think it looks loads and loads better than past Grand Theft Autos, and especially good for having just come off of the PS2, which is notorious for looking dated. Everything about this game is improved from the original and the last sequel, including very effective usage of pixel shaders, dynamic reflections, and improved physics.

There's a bunch of new gameplay mechanics. Basically everything that you could want to do, the ability to run a gang (get gang members to follow you, and help perform drive-bys and all of that), and there's gang wars over turf now, you have to both attack and defend, and you get money for holding more territories. There's even more buildings you can enter, they took the stealth from Manhunt so you can even play like that, slinking in the shadows. There's an RPG element that not only forces you to work out, and eat food, but also using certain guns makes you better with them and unlocks new features. If you get good enough with pistols or micro SMGs, you can dual wield. Cars have gas tanks that will explode with one shot. You can change your clothes, haircut, and tattoos. Basically, anything that you could want in this game, Rockstar has added it. The sheer number of additions to already amazing gameplay makes past Grand Theft Autos feel like betas.

And now you can swim, too!

Another thing of note is that the controls are very intuitive, so there's not even a hint of this being a crude console port. You'd expect no less from Rockstar North. The loading times are virtually non-existent, and that seems to be one of the problems that the Xbox version is suffering from. On the PC, everything seems to work very, very smoothly.

However, I did notice some problems with the AI code in the game. While for the most part, the NPCs in the environment will react the way they're supposed to, occasionally, they will fail to recognize the gravity of their situation (like when they're being shot at), or exhibit some minor path finding issues (like in one of the earlier missions where some of your gang members are supposed to follow you around on foot). Also, while the physics have obviously been greatly improved over what we saw in Vice City, kicking, say an empty cardboard box still doesn't appear entirely believable. Of course, these are just minor technical gripes and they will in no way hinder your enjoyment of the game, but they are still worth mentioning.

Basically, what we have here is Grand Theft Auto on speed. It's about ten times what the original, groundbreaking game was, in every way. More importantly, the additions and improvements that have been introduced in this latest installment in the series do make a huge difference on the gameplay. They are not just cosmetic changes, they make the entire game experience a whole lot better. That's what good sequels should be all about.

I can't not recommend this game to fans of the series, and basically anyone that has ever wanted to vent out a little by committing virtual crimes. It is the perfect crime game.

Even the packaging for the game is a work of art.

OG is definitely my fav character, the dude who does his voice NAILS it.
King Speedy [mail] Jun 10 2005, 12:35 pm EDT
great review, but only one measly sentence to praise the beautiful packaging?....honestly...in an age where we sometimes don't even get a full printed manual, Rockstar gives us a fucking hardback book....
Trustkill [mail] Jun 10 2005, 12:41 pm EDT
Oh yeah, has anyone else noticed that the vehicles hug the road a lot better and feel MUCH faster than the previous games? I love it. and I love you too. yeah you.

Like I said in the forum: You gotta love a game that lets you beat people to death with a big purple double-sided dildo.
skribb [mail] Jun 10 2005, 12:52 pm EDT
I WILL play this game. When I've stopped playing WoW T_T.
Smapdey [mail] Jun 10 2005, 02:37 pm EDT
I guess I have one major complaint I left out in the review. Flying is fucking retarded.
  DinoX: how so?
2lions: Well, as it was in any GTA game if you remember Vice City.
Smapdey: Nevermind, it was just a pain for me to start with. Blah.

I love this game. It's so entertaining. But what gives with the sky during sunset? Sometimes the sky would be at sunset then suddenly changes to night. It goes back and forth and back and forth in a few seconds. This is a bug.

Los Santos is a BITCH to navigate, and those other damn gangs seem to have a limitless supply of "heat"... bastards.

Hitman [mail] Jun 10 2005, 05:14 pm EDT
That reviews either means the game is extremely worth the money, or that the writer is a fanboy.. I will go with both and buy it.

Thanks for the heads-up.. I would prefer you give me some heads-down, but whatever.

I'm going to move the content upsetting the Senate portion from low to high thus changing the score, for me atleast, to 96.
Cheddar [mail] Jun 11 2005, 12:32 am EDT
94. Well. I dunno. Maybe I should finally give this new generation of GTA a chance.

You know, I'm hardcore, I was a fan of the original first two GTA games, way back before it was raking in the cash post-GTA3 and became a media hot-button. ;^)
Stick! [mail] Jun 11 2005, 01:02 am EDT
Now, i looked through my folder for GTA:SA and im not quites ure where to put my mp3's, or can you at all even? do i just put them in the audio folder and leave it or what?
Mitza [mail] Jun 11 2005, 03:08 pm EDT
"some AI issues" is an understatement, Smap. the typical day in San Andreas involves cars crashing randomly into eachother, pedestrians jumping infront of your car and people screaming and running in circles for no aparent reason.
the game is dope, though, absolutely lovely, but the AI and the bugs (especially the sound ones) are on the "fucked up" side.
cheers, bitches!

Caracaos: 'some AI issues' ? It sounds like typical Los Angeles, dude.
Smapdey [mail] Jun 11 2005, 03:24 pm EDT
I think that some of that is supposed to make the game feel more realistic. Like the cars crashing into each other and what-not. But yeah, the other stuff is a little weird.

Even weirder is the same bugs existed in III and VC before they were patched.
Stick! [mail] Jun 11 2005, 09:22 pm EDT
yeah wahts up with that, the damn citizens jumping into your car are in all three...its liek the copy and paste the same code and add more for whatever new features. Btw yeah, im still looking for an answer on where to put my mp3's for the custom music. Just in the audio folder or what?

"The content is going to have the Senate in an uproar"
is that a con? I'd say a pro.
unskinnybob [mail] Jun 13 2005, 05:31 am EDT
Considering Smap is a XBOX fanboy and the game comes straight off the PS2, his score actually translates to 100%. Oh, except for the flying. It is less than perfect, but so was Battlefields'. Neither are flight-sims.
