» All About Hard Reset on ActionTrip

Strolling through the FPS realm, it's easy to notice the absence to true innovation. Still, coming up with something that would revolutionize the FPS genre is probably as hard as convincing your mother that most of the games you play are, in fact, works of art. However, when it comes to the customary shoot-everything-in-sight-and-survive routine, we are prepared to tone down any potentially harsh criticism, especially if we witness a new and bold endeavor from a young and upcoming development team such as the Poland-based Flying Wild Hog. Shoot us if you want, but these guys deserve a fair chance, as much as anyone else.

The PC-exclusive, Hard Reset, is a frantic, busy and fast-paced shooter that hurls you into a dark, cyberpunk style setting, where you play as one Major Fletcher, an Army Combat Veteran and a soldier of the CLN. The major is assigned to carry out a quick mission, but pretty soon is forced to resolve a perplexing mystery surrounding the influential professor Novak, who has made some pretty interesting discoveries and is prepared to sacrifice himself for a higher purpose.

As baffling as it may seem sometimes, the story was noticeably written with great haste, merely to provide an adequate backdrop for the bloodbath to come. Well, when I say bloodbath, I actually meant, motor-oil-bath, or whatever the hell leaks out of the hundreds and hundreds of mechanical minions which you need to mow down before you reach the end of each level in the game.

It's difficult not to get caught up in Hard Reset's compelling gameplay. The storyline lacks punch and more info about the characters so that it might actually hold our interest. The attractions of Hard Reset lie elsewhere. Namely, you'll be taken in by its simple, yet addictive, shooter mechanics. You have a bunch of weapons that you grab and upgrade over time. The main character can further improve other aspects such as shield and health, in addition to improving firearms to give them more oomph shall we say. Rather standard, you might think, and you'd be right. Hard Reset doesn't deviate much from the typical shooter recipe, but that's kind of the game's best asset, when you think about it. It's a well-balanced and challenging shooter, one that keeps moving forward and never lets up, which means you'll have plenty of baddies to kill. Aside from figuring out how to open a few locked gates (which is usually very obvious), there's almost no thinking required.

What we enjoyed the most about Hard Reset is its persistence to keep the player entertained at all times. Enemies are as tough as they come. Even the tiny ones often attack in droves and they sidestep and move unpredictably when dashing towards you, which makes them formidable targets. The bigger your foes are, the harder they are to bring down. Boss fights are quite challenging too, albeit they bring nothing new to the table.

7.8   Good

HIGHS
Surprisingly good-looking, runs smoothly on a majority of rigs, the sounds is okay too, the gameplay has enough to engage shooter fans;

LOWS
Dumb story, players can't crouch or reload their weapons and switching between the two main weapons is sometimes unresponsive, the game's a bit on the short side.
