![]() 8.9 Very Good City sieges, awesome sounds and visuals, great soundtrack - just so much more spectacular looking (and sounding) than the previous games; Path finding and other AI glitches, rather awkward looking turn-based map, turn-based game has room left for improvement. RATINGS GUIDE |

| » All About Rome: Total War on ActionTrip | |
But to get back to the real-time battles, even though they were truly a remarkable sight, they weren't without their nagging little drawbacks. The enemy was fairly smart, although for the life of me, I couldn't understand why they wouldn't charge my artillery sometimes. Let me give you an example - I would attack a Nubian city that garrisons twice as many troops as I had in my invading army. Strangely enough even though I would leave my catapults fairly exposed and just keep pounding at their city until half of them were dead, they never once attempted a quick cavalry rush to root out the source of their misery. But you shouldn't consider this a serious AI drawback; I'm not a military strategist, so it could be that Creative Assembly intentionally set things up this way.
![]() It's not 79BC, but who's counting the years anyway. |
![]() Awesome equestrian summersault, man! You get 9 for style and 10 for technique. |
However, that doesn't in any way alleviate the fact that sometimes my troops would take the strangest routes to their designated location - a bridge or a large building inside a city will confuse the hell out of them and they will exhibit very strange path finding routines. That certainly wasn't the intention of the developers - that much I'm certain of. Finally, while the enemy would react intelligently to my troop movement, my own units would sometimes mindlessly rush the wrong troops even though I incessantly kept ordering them to go elsewhere. I guess they would get all horny in the heat of the battle and decide to pursue whomever they see fit. Then again, when Praetorian Cavalry charges troops with long, pointy spears, it doesn't really fare too well for them ... or for my army.
Another minor gripe I had with Rome: Total War is that sometimes, it's just too easy to lay a siege to the city and sieze it after 5-6 turns. Granted, in the later stages of the game, the citizen will revolt, but that's a minor inconvenience as long as you have well trained troops going up against them. What I consider somewhat ridiculous is that the Carthaginians for example didn't rush to their capital city's aid, and they just let me take it after a couple of turns. Then again, I got cocky like that and attempted the same stunt with the Egyptian capital, Alexandria. Let's just say that I got my ass handed to me down by the Nile.
Would I recommend this game to everyone? Yes, of course. Any self-respecting strategy gamer should own it. However, the underlining impression that I got is that Creative Assembly hasn't expanded on the core game play that much (there is especially room for improvement left in the turn-based department). As far as tactics and empire management are concerned, this is not a (much) more elaborate strategy game, and the AI does have its faults, but this is certainly an infinitely more cinematic and spectacular looking strategy game than before. The rest is all a matter of personal preference.

| Just for the record though, I'm talking here about the Praetorian Cavalry and Cohorts - not exactly a rowdy and wild bunch of soldiers. They were the most disciplined Roman troops. I'm not talking about nutty barbarians here... And for such an elite unit to rush mindlessly into spearmen... well, you know... that's not exactly the nicest thing from a general's standpoint – and not exactly disciplined either. Still, I agree that both the rushing issue and the fact that enemy troops wouldn’t leave their keep at any circumstances could be deliberate. Path finding though is a legitimate AI issue no matter how you look at it, and it isn’t exactly helpful when you need precise execution on the field. |

| Why the fuck do these mother bitches have to include turn based elements in a game. Why, why dammit! I couldn't play Rise of Nations because of the turn based shit. It makes me sick. It makes me want to inject developers with giant popsicles in their pee holes. But I will be sure to give this one a try. I hope that the turn based shit is easy! | ||

| Garymm, you forgot that I played it on an NVIDIA 6800 Ultra as well :) But seriously, I mentioned in there that mid range rigs should be able to handle the game (most of the time). And as for the people complaining about the turn-based segment. To me that's the most enjoyable aspect of this game. You only should fight when you HAVE to. That's why I like Total War games so much, and that's why I kind of feel disappointed that they didn't expand on that aspect of the game. |

Thrawn: so is that part really just the same in 3d? (plus wot u said... 2lions: There's more diplomacy options now, you can now make offers,... Thrawn: there was never anything wrg with the battle side, just wish... Annihilator: Man, the turn-based portion of this game is pretty awesome. ... | ||

| 1) I know about rise of nations and how the turn based elements were incorporated in it. I just couldnt get the hang of it. I dont want to play fucking chess everytime I want to do battle. Plus the base building and all other tasks in that game were too tedious for me. 2) I have read about Rome Total War and am definitely going to try it, especially the idea of the computer doing all the turn based crap appeals to me a hell lot. If everything else is real-time then yeah awesome! The sheer fact that turn based can be computer controlled implies how needless it is (:p). 3) I slam on everything that I hate, what is wrong with that. I hate turn based strategy. I will absolutely slam on everything that has it, regardless of which game it is. I have yet to try out rome total war and only complained about these people incorporating unnecessary elements as turn based combat in places which simply do not need it (again IMO, for the uninitiated). Btw the only turn based games I am happy with are Bioware RPG's (for example NWN, KOTOR etc). 4) Will post more when I actually play the game. 5) Finally a comment with less cussing, happy now fat? |

| "Every TW game so far has expanded on it, and its to the point now that i will auto battle most of my battles and only play out close ones where a strategic touch is needed." I play exactly the same way. I'm just saying that they could've expanded that segment of the game even more... |

| Ok so the comp can't do the turn based shit, guess I will have to brush up my chess sense a bit! Damn I suck at turn based strategy. :( | ||
