» All About Soldier of Fortune: Payback on ActionTrip

The bloodshed can be switched off, but its inclusion wasn't looked kindly upon in certain parts of the world. While most countries were okay with Payback being M-rated, Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) effectively banned the game from sale Down Under, due to "high impact" violence.

Seeing as this was a Value title, I was rather surprised with what the development team has done in terms of visuals. Even though most of the levels appear ...rather plastic, other details and visual effects make the game seem a bit more up-to-date. Explosions are passable and there's a solid variety of environments to go through. Another obvious thing is that the team did a solid job on creating the character models and fine-tuning ragdoll physics. You'll also appreciate the variety of death animations.

The game isn't exactly technically sound. On top of sudden frame-rate drops, you're liable to experience occasional visual bugs. There's a patch available for the game, which may help solve some of these problems.

If senseless, over-the-top violence can keep you entertained, you'll be done with the single-player portion in several hours, after which you might want to get into the multiplayer. Yet, this is just another mundane aspect of the game, featuring nothing beyond the traditional deathmatch, CTF and so on.

So, as it happens, I did have some fun with SoF: Payback; plus, it did evoke some of the SoF nostalgia. At the same time, however, I think the content and gameplay do not justify the game's price tag. If you're really that desperate and keen on experiencing a largely inane gory action game, Payback is just the ticket. Even so, you're sure to be annoyed by the cheap tricks pulled off by the enemy AI.

Do yourself a favor and let this one pass. There are so many other shooters on the market that are worth your while - Crysis, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Halo 3, BioShock, The Orange Box, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War (PC)... take your pick.

SO vader gets to review SoF3 whilst 2lions is given mass effect and all the other big name titles. I smell mutiny
King Speedy: Vader got Crysis too.

Gawd damn, well im playing it right now, and its what I expected, its nothing special, its SOF without john mullins, ahh well still nasty seeing someone lose there arm, try and find it, and then u pop there head off with another akround

So much fuss about all this games and they are totally forgettable and with tons of cliche. If i was to choose again wich one to buy, i would only go for HL 2 EP 2 and maybe COD 4 for the feeling and presentation.

"The developers tweaked the physics and Raven's old GHOUL system, so models are now fitted with an increased number of hit zones."
Have you even played the previous installments? It's not even the GHOUL system. It's some half assed butchered gore system.
Anyway, the game is pretty poor compared to the previous two titles. The fans waited years for a proper sequel but we got this tripe instead.
You didn't even mention that it's lacking several pc multiplayer components and graphic options. There's no copy etc protection whatsoever.
They basically made a value game for the consoles and ported it over to the PC.
WOO [mail] Nov 21 2007, 02:25 pm EST
I agree the previous installment was much better, the gore was way superior a magnitude of hit zones realistic animations bullet holes, knife wounds, more believable dismemberment. God they even had guts popping out and head fragmentation that was way beyond anything we saw before it... plus the best looking blood ever. For a gore fan it was paradise. But there was more to the game the single player was actually fun the cut scenes were pretty cool and the multilayer was super fun and it still is... Payback is an embarrassment and death to the franchise.
Killer Klown [mail] Nov 21 2007, 02:26 pm EST
Yeah. It's SoF without the SoF. John Mullins was actually a military 'consultant' and brought at least some degree of plot to the game. From what I'm seeing of this, it's just a military-themed Postal.
Cheddar [mail] Nov 21 2007, 03:15 pm EST
This game is made of fail and lose.

Thank's Cauldron. Hope you go bankrupt. A Value title or not, the SoF franchise shouldn't be dragged through the mud like this.

So actually, I suppose Activision is the real villain here.

played it, hate it, fuck it.
ive just woken up to go to school so il have to enumerate some goods and bads for the game but unfortunately most of them are bads.

good: graphics, sort of. they resemble CoD4 in a way but not as much as some may hope for because of poor coding on behalf of the developers. gore, though that’s also not much because speaking from a horror fan's point of view ive seen better thrills in a children's books proving that blood is good but you have to use it accordingly to the right moment and not just splatter it all around.

the bad: sounds, lack of feeling in the weaponry....as in they all act kinda the same, no story, blatantly stupid acting and so on.

conclusion: don’t buy it for God's sake, a normal gamer will foam at the mouth after playing it and probably a fan will mentally collapse in sadness and fear to ever play another shooter EVER.

I enjoyed every minute of it. The weapons felt better than in CoD4. The environments were nice and varied. And the gore, aaah... for instance I pulverized a guy's legs as he tried to jump from one balcony to another. The animation was perfect as he lost his balance and his chunk of body fell through the gap.
That's what I expected from this game and I got plenty of it. GG Cauldron. I'd rate this baby with a 69.
Roboman [mail] Nov 21 2007, 11:32 pm EST
yeah, i played the first level (and the first jungle part, in the canyon) and i dont know if im going to bother finishing it. i think the enemies are way too accurate from extreme distances and if they hit you you cant do shit because of the stupid damage effect. however, im surprised with how good the graphics actually are for what is otherwise a shoddy title. the weapon choices and modification are pretty cool, even if theyre basically gimmicks. as mentioned above, the gore is nowhere NEAR Double Helix...i remember blowing chunks off of peoples head and intestines coming out.

in conclusion, the decision to upgrade this from a "value game" obviously was only on paper, as thats all that this game is.
R.B.X. [mail] Nov 21 2007, 11:54 pm EST
SoF was great no doubt about it...the graphics, animation....in that department his alright in my book...
subforce [mail] Nov 22 2007, 04:22 am EST
Yeah but what we really want to know is if you shoot them in the crotch do they still grab their yam sack and scream like a girl????? Gaming goodness at its finest in a very primal kinda way.
