» All About S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat on ActionTrip

One of the reasons why this game received a lower score is because it left too many things untold and, while I appreciate the effort to create an immersive authentic world laid to waste by a nuclear disaster, I simply can't escape the recurring feeling that something is missing in this game. The world is empty - as you'd expect from nasty "little occurrences" such as nuclear fallout. But maybe, just maybe, it's too damn "empty" this time. But not in the sense of life, NPCs or enemies. More in terms of important events, crucial story moments and such. Damn, it's harder to explain than I thought. Another thing that really disappointed me was the all-so-sudden ending. Just when things were getting interesting, story wise, the end credits came up (I was like: "Oh, finally, the story gets going... wait, what? Noooo..."). Happily, there's a nice little bonus feature for gamers who didn't get a chance to complete all side-quests in the first playthrough. You can choose to stay in the Zone and go through all the challenges and tasks you may have missed, which is great, albeit it won't take you a lot to do this. As for me, I only had two unsolved quests and when I returned to the new-fangled free-roam mode (yes, it's new to the series), I was done in less than half an hour. So there.

The game also packs Deathmatch and CTF style competitive matches with its multiplayer mode. Mind you, this doesn't exactly represent the highlight of the experience. If you want to get the best out of this game, stick with the main campaign, for what it's worth.

With this game, you'll either know exactly what you're getting into, which means you're a diehard S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan or you've simply enjoyed the previous two games and will happily immerse yourself into the creepiness of the Zone once more. Everything you've come to expect from the series is there, from artifacts, plenty of items and weapons to toy around with, as well as a solid variety of missions. Generally, the mission structure in Call of Pripyat won't leave you disappointed. There are plenty of new areas to explore. Certain quests won't be easy since you are not given the exact location the map. Instead, you explore and discover things yourself. That's essentially what it's about - immersing yourself in an amazingly realistic post-apocalyptic world, learning its secrets and meeting people along the way. If that's the kind of ride you're after, CoP shouldn't disappoint. Then again, if you're expecting a detailed, well-told story, with rich characterization, you won't find it here.

Oh and just in case you get any ideas, there are still no women in the game. Hm, maybe in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2? Just a thought on my part. I'm not criticizing. I seriously won't complain in there are no women in the sequel. I really won't.

Important note: The screenshots posted with this review were taken with DX9 based graphics.

HIGHS
The most polished game in the series, a lot of missions, coupled with a variety of gameplay improvements make this worth your time, it stays true to the compelling post-apocalyptic ambience of its predecessors and conveys the horrifying existence in nuclear fallout way better than games like Fallout 3;

LOWS
At times it feels like the story is non-existent, characters often seem lifeless and uninteresting, a few AI glitches and other technical problems are still present (nothing too get all miffed about though)... Multiplayer? Hardly noticed it.

Well, I should note that the screen captures are from the DX9 version.

Though DX11 doesn't make it any prettier. Not a lot anyway.

It is breathtakingly atmospheric and immersive.
99% of games could learn from it in this regard - you can really lose yourself in this game.It should be a must play for any fps dev.

And on my PC it looks 100% better than on Vaders screenshot. Urgh. Not to mention possibility to install AtmosFear mod which improves it even more.

Trees looks horrible in dx10, same as dx7 (trees are the ultimate test)

Biggest knock on this game is the gunplay. It's a good thing the open-world is so ambient and immersive, because NPC/mutant animations are shit (by current-generation standards) and firing the guns just doesn't feel very engaging. I don't mind the realism -- I sort of like the guns being so hard to use well -- it's the little things, like gunfire sounds, animations, bullet impact visuals, etc. All of it combines to make the gunplay experience comparable to or even worse than many amateur modding efforts I've seen for other games.

The game could also use a much better sound-engine that it currently has, which doesn't even remotely do justice to the extremely visually immersive environments in the game-world.

GSC is clearly a studio that suffers from being too loyal to its founding members, because it's obvious they have some very talented developers working alongside some very untalented developers.

If GSC really wants to make the next step and become truly elite, they need to get rid of the sub-par talent they have on staff and hire better to replace them.

Oh and btw, DX11 does look better than DX10. The lighting is just more realistic.

I admit it's pretty subtle, though.

Maybe when it's 9 bucks on Steam.
FesterSilently: Well, it's $19.99, at the moment (on Steam)...is that close ...

maybe when it's free.

I'm currently replaying this with the SMRTER mod, I highly recommend it for anyone who wants more of the game, since it brings back the survival element by adding more life to the zone and makes the overall game a little more fun.
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Feb 26 2010, 05:34 am EST
Might try it. Oh wait, I don't have the time.
greenberet: You seem to have a lot of time playing those games on consol...
