Being of the first KOTOR, I admit I was days until of sequel. Sure, BioWare handling, but had full that Obsidian would well. I'm sad you that the having a fantastic story, does also mixed bag, as Obsidian obviously expertise to truly or even mildly franchise.

Now let me ask you this, did you enjoy reading the previous passage, because if you had, I know a nice, quiet place we can send you. When the men in the white coats come to get you, go quietly, do as they ask and maybe, just maybe, you may come to grips with reality again. (Ed. - Thank God that was intentional, I was about to call them up myself.) In regards to the opening paragraph, I was merely trying to convey how the game ran for me on Dantooine. Yep, if you happen to have an ATI Radeon card, a high-end AMD-based system with over 1GB of RAM, and all the latest drivers and whatnots installed, this is how the game will run for you on Dantooine. Be prepared for the ultimate in choppy and laggy performance, this is actually good Jedi training because as we all know patience is the Jedi's greatest weapon.

What I was trying to convey in the opening paragraph is that the highly anticipated sequel to Knights of the Old Republic is, by all accounts a mixed bag of blessings. Some things it does well, others it does so horribly wrong that you feel like giving in to the dark side and slashing your computer monitor in half.

In terms of the storyline, Knights of the Old Republic 2 ties in beautifully with the original game, making a natural and logical continuation, while succeeding in broadening the scope of the whole Jedi philosophy and bringing some true literary value to the Star Wars franchise. The narrative in the sequel is every bit as deep and involving, if not even more so, than in the previous game. And considering that the story was one of the original game's greatest strengths, this says a lot about the ability of the writers. The plot is suspenseful and rarely (if ever) pathetic. It's so good in fact, that you can call this game a cross between a novel and a video game. KOTOR 2 manages to reach certain depths story-wise that none of the movies could ever touch, and if I may say so, it gives meaning to the Star Wars universe, something Lucas himself has, in my humble opinion, failed to do with the new batch of movies. (Ed. - Hear, hear!)

Ironically however, the game's biggest strength at times casts a shadow over some of its other important segments. How so, you ask? Well, KOTOR 2 is so focused on the story and dialogue that the player will often feel a suspicious absence of proper gameplay. Obsidian is not BioWare and they've failed to strike the perfect balance between presenting the story and making sure that there is enough meat to the gameplay. KOTOR 2 will often feel like an interactive storybook, and coming from someone who adores both the story in the sequel and the general design principle of the story being one of the foundations of a good video game, that is saying a lot.

For the most part, the sequel plays like the original. The character progression, interface, and combat - it all plays the same. Granted, Obsidian did include the new features that we've talked about at length in our preview, but the ability to assume lightsaber stances, and the bigger interaction between you and your party members didn't prove as drastic or as successful as I had hoped. Possibly the biggest change that Obsidian has introduced is the added emphasis on the game's ending, or how your actions throughout the game influence the different endings. In that sense, KOTOR 2 does provide some choices, but the general design of the levels and missions still feels very railed and linear. Even so, it is very important to emphasize here that the original formula, which has worked so well before, works for the sequel too. If you've loved the original, there's very little chance that you won't enjoy the sequel, and the storybook analogy was possibly taken too far.

One thing you should keep in mind though is that KOTOR came out back in 2003. Disregard the moderate cosmetic touches, and two years on, KOTOR 2 looks the same and has much of the same AI routines as the original. What this means is that the engine is clearly showing its age. The character animation looks horribly stiff, and the AI will show symptoms of genuine stupidity - they will charge headlong into mines, regardless of the behavior pattern you have chosen for them, they will have troubles navigating around areas that are more complex, and so on.

The sound effects are of the quality you'd expect from a top-of-the-line Star Wars title, but it remains a mystery to me as to why the soundtrack (though brilliant) sounds so low quality. Another thing that will surely bother some folks is the inconsistency of the voice acting. Some voices sound terrific, while others, like Bao-Dur, sound like Obsidian and Lucas couldn't afford real actors, so they had the level designer try his hand at voice acting.

But even despite all of the aforementioned drawbacks, I was prepared to give the game a high mark. The sequel offers plenty of hours of fun - we're talking 20-30 hours of playtime here, being wrapped in a story that will surely keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. KOTOR 2 does possess the same addictive qualities that made me fall in love with the original, and that is why I had a strong desire to play on. In terms of the final score, I was prepared to disregard most of the drawbacks if only the game hadn't performed so horribly for me at critical moments. It should be noted that I haven't played the aforementioned missions on my NVIDIA rig, but that's no excuse if the game runs like this on the second most popular GPU on the market. Should I blame ATI or should I place the blame on Obsidian? I have no clue really, and it's not my business to weigh on such matters. All I know is that the horrible performance, a few random crashes, and other minor bugs have severely diminished my enjoyment of an otherwise addictive and excellently written Star Wars RPG.

Besides the odd crash to desktop I'm having, its been an awesome experience so far. I get a hard on for good Starwars, so after seeing the score I'm not going to read the review incase it ruins anything I haven't noticed. So far its been way more enjoyable than HL2 imo. Regarding the performance issues, I'm running in 1600x1200 with 4x AF and 4x FSAA at 50-60fps?

Good game, but its very fucked up. I am on Dantoonie right now and the place is so fucked up at times its hard to explore some parts of the world. Well really the beginning was the most fucked up. You look at one area and its running great, then turn the camera to the left a little and holy shit my frames are going 1 and below. At some parts my guy looks like he’s warping from place to place.

I thought it's the same engine as KOTOR 1, which I had no issues with on a 9600XT. What did they do to it that it runs so horribly?

i havent been to Dantoonie yet but i had some laggy/choppy issues when on Telos. the area where the living quarters, Exchange office, and Czerka Office are at. why does this game always come with bugs for the pc? damnit, stick to one platform.

Dodgex3m, tried that yesterday and it didn't work, even with the disabled vertex buffer. Dantooine is fucked beyond belief.

" KOTOR 2 is so focused on the story and dialogue that the player will often feel a suspicious absence of proper gameplay"

In other words: The creators of PlaneScape:Torment have finally returned to the roots. If that causes a lot of illiterate console kiddies to start crying because they have to read more than 2 lines in the whole game, so be it.

"One thing you should keep in mind though is that KOTOR came out back in 2003 ... [snip] ... What this means is that the engine is clearly showing its age."

Yes, well since both KoTOR and the sequel are primarily console titles I would be more than a little surprised if the sequel DIDN'T look the same as the original when taking into account that the XBOX IS STILL THE SAME POS NOW AS WHEN IT WAS RELEASED!!!

For crying out loud, how can anyone expect engine improvements from a game as gorgeous as KoTOR was/is when not a single clock cycle or memory circuit has been added to the hardware running it?

Bah, I could go on but it is already painfully obvious that I DON'T see eye to eye with the reviewer on certain points in this case, so I'll be quiet and go away.

I'm running this game at 1280x1024 4xAA, 16xAF on my 6800 Ultra. The game does slow down at times, but it's nothing too serious. I noticed that it doesn't help if you disable AA and AF. The game will lag at certain places, no matter what you do. Sometimes it helps if you disable soft shadows in some very smoke/fog heavy places.

At any rate. These same things happened to me with KOTOR 1, so it's allright. Some places in KOTOR 2 look worse than in KOTOR 1. It's hard to belive, but it's true.

I would still give the game a score of 90 though, but i haven't played it on ATI machine so i don't know how bad it is. I had no trouble with the AI, but i have NO IDEA what they did with the running animation. It looked much better in the first game.

I played this title on my Xbox and I haven't had a chance to go over it again on the PC.

This was a very story based game, it was truly brilliant story telling, but the gameplay was really only used as a way to move the story along, there aren't really any sequences that provide tons and tons of combat without somehow advancing the story in someway. Nothing is mindless. As a result, you're not so much playing a typical game that focuses on gameplay, as you are a game that took the core gameplay of a successful original and copied while adding a lot more story, perhaps too much of a story for the tastes of some people.

It is to be noted that I did experience hardware problems on my Xbox as well. The game itself isn't very polished.
  BadCRC: XENOSAGA HM?!
Cheddar [mail] Feb 14 2005, 08:12 pm EDT
Well, as much as I'd like to give my own critique, I don't have much time this week to play this game, so it's gonna be awhile before I can obtain an informed, properly empathetic opinion.

However, there are a few things I note.

One is the debate of story vs gameplay, and what's the best balance. Personally......I'd take an intense, immersive story at the sacrifice of "proper" gameplay without a second thought, and consider it a bargain. PLENTY of games succeed in the later, while FAR FEWER succeed in the former. So KotOR 2 is like an interactive book, you say? Hell yeah! So maybe there isn't as much mindless fighting (though entertaining), with waves and waves of enemies all through-out the game. Yeah, I suppose that'd be nice to have WITHOUT SACRIFICING the game's story components (as I think I understand 2Lions was saying KotOR 1 did actually achieve, in contrast to what KotOR 2 achieved).....but I can also easily do without it (as long as the story experience makes up for it, that is).

I call that sort of attribute in a game its "arcade" value. And just like arcades, sure, that shit's fun and all.....but it's not particularly deeply emotionally evocative, is it? Arcade-elements provide cheap thrill value. It's the butter that goes with your bread. Adds taste, but ultimately the bread's much more important than the butter, no? It's butter with your bread, not bread with your butter.

And so in summary, you're saying KotOR 2 has a particularly awesome story experience, but little arcade-fun value. Well, that's fine with me. As far as I'm concerned, that's like not having whip cream on your hot chocolate (to make another food analogy, heh). Yeah, it'd be nice, but it's really only superficial reinforcement to a far more important central focus, know what I mean? That's how I feel, anyway.

Second. About the performance issues. The review didn't go into any particular detail, just generally mentioned that the game has such issues, so I'm curious to get a bit more detail about this.

So 2Lions, are you saying that KotOR 2 runs even more poorly performance-wise than KotOR 1, or is it the same? You never actually made that clear. I'm extremely interested in knowing this. Afterall, it is pretty much the same engine with only minimal enhancements (iirc), so there's no reason as far as I can tell for the game to be even worse now in that regard.

In any case, even KotOR 1 had its problems in this area, and I rather feel the blame still lies more with Bioware than Obsidian, even in this sequel....unless there's something I don't know. Bio's to blame for making a game engine clearly focused primarily on Xbox compatibility, with the PC version being a distinctly secondary priority. As usual, a company that made its name and built its success from the money of PC gamers gives their original fanbase the short-end of the stick. But consoles simply offer more profit, so I know its no surprise. But still, it's a shame.

My current uninformed, impulse opinion is that the score this game got is lower than it should be, to be honest. But if I start playing this game and it consistently lags worse performance-wise than the original game did, and I routinely find myself encountering significantly severe, experience-debilitating bugs........then I'll probably end up agreeing with the score.
2lions [STAFF] [mail] Feb 15 2005, 05:25 am EDT

It is not that the engine is too taxing on your hardware, it's just that the code has obviously been written very poorly and there are numerous memory leaks and such that at certain VERY IMPORTANT locations literally bring the frame rate down to 1. The game lags like you're playing on 1500 ping. It is in every respect horrible. Many parts in the game will run as they should, but overall, between the AI stupidity, the random crashes, and of course these incredible slowdowns (the entire outdoor area of Dantooine is completely fucked, and that's not the only area), I literally COULD NOT enjoy the game properly.

There is no chance in hell that this game deserves a higher score no matter how biased you are towards games with good stories.

And just for the record, I'm biased towards a story-driven gameplay experience myself, so go figure. Hell, I voted Vampire the runner-up for last year, even though it was buggy as hell, but it was never UNPLAYABLE, and at certain instances KOTOR 2 is UNPLAYABLE.

I'm just right now on Dantooine and i have no serious lag. It's the same as in the first game. I'm getting around 40-60FPS on my 6800U (1280x1024, 4xaa, 16xAF).
I'm near the end of the game so from my experiance i would give it at least 90% :p
daftshadow [mail] Feb 16 2005, 02:52 pm EDT
me too. i experienced no problems on Dantooine. im running kotor2 on my 6800GT (1024x768, 4xAA, 16xAF, vsync enabled, shadows enabled, frame buffer enabled)

this is exactly why i switched to nvidia, after being an ati fan for the past several years. nvidia cards are more reliable and stable than ati. damn those canadians!!!
RogerWilco [mail] Feb 16 2005, 09:59 pm EDT
I'm playing through the first KOTOR right now and I eliminated the severe lag on Dantooine by adding this line to my .ini file under Graphics Options:
Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1

Now it runs fine. You guys tried this yet?
  MrBored: Yeah, works great. Nice.
stolk@24.99.76.33: Worked for me as well. Thanks.
unskinnybob [mail] Feb 17 2005, 10:04 am EDT
I'm not playing Kotor2 till they fix the fucking bugs. Christ - the choppy framerate and frame skipping is horrible! Does Quality Assurance not exist anymore?!
2lions: I was wondering the exact same thing.
cpd [mail] Feb 17 2005, 07:17 pm EDT
I don't have any framerate issues (yay for DX7 on MX440), I'm just stuck on Telos because when I'm going to kill that Quarren dude, one droid comes out, the door closes, then NEVER reopens. I've had heaps of bugs with skipping cutscenes and people getting locked in places (eg. a guard getting locked in my room when I first got to Telos.)

THIS SUCKS
MrBored [mail] Feb 18 2005, 12:35 pm EDT
Just btw, you get about a 10fps increase if you set the Catalyst AI to Full, or High ( you have to use a 3rd party program like Ati Tray, google it, if you don't have the CCC installed. ). I'm not sure what its default is though, so it might be on high already :/

Haven't got to Dantooine yet.
future man [mail] Feb 19 2005, 04:44 pm EDT
I take backwhat I said about you being wrong, the performance issues are bullshit. I totally understand the score now.
MrBored [mail] Feb 19 2005, 05:46 pm EDT
They didn't fix any problems the first one had ffs :/ You can't go through each player in your group and plan your attack, if you're not controlling a char it doesn't do what you tell it. Sometimes the fucking char I'm controlling will randomly clear the attack queue and either do its own shit, or change targets, WTF?! The best is when you just finish attacking a group of mercs and one of your party members gets up from dieing and decides he can see a new target in the distance. He runs off and gets killed and there is no way to order a party retreat. Cause he runs off the other member does as well and there is fuck all you can do about it. Fun!

Oh oh, I also love how they will run through a mine field, thats uber cool. I'm pissed off and I haven't even got to the lag zone yet. So much for my initial enjoyment. Telos is the worst. Going from Peragus to Telos is like being forced to play Tarus twice. :/ [/rant]

playing the game with my ati 9700pro, despite the system check being above recommended specs. I got choppy fps and shit load of graphic artifects. spikes.....polygons just stick out of characters and objects, I'm starting to regret upgrading to ati over nvidia.... the animation it self is worst than the first game, no artistic talent. THIS IS BULLSHIT! would any of you keep up with this piece of shit if it wasn't for the first?
Cheddar: Ah, super. I have a 9700 Pro.
MrBored [mail] Feb 26 2005, 12:45 pm EDT
Well I'm excited about the game again, it rocks and flows quite differently from the first which is nice. The first one had this monotamy about completing the each planet whereas this doesn't, especially with regards to Onderon and Dxun. I'm glad that the Disable vertex buffer line in the ini works 100%, no lag or any other problems here. It was suggested in one of the first bunch of posts, not sure why it was ignored :/
