» All About Supreme Commander on ActionTrip

The difference between each faction is huge, but only becomes apparent after you've advanced technology and warfare up to a certain level, at which point you'll realize the unique abilities of each side. The Cybran faction, for example, can build naval units that may also march across land (though somewhat slowly). Your success often depends on how well you've utilized some of these units. It's important to know their weaknesses and their advantages. If you should head out into enemy waters with a bunch of frigates, you can be sure they will be able to take out enemy defenses efficiently. However, if you fail to provide a well-coordinated escort, with numerous submarines and gunboats, don't expect the frigates to last very long. Similarly, air bombers won't do you much good without fighters by their side.

I do have a few gripes in the graphics department. Anybody out there not packing a dual-core rig and a reasonably powerful GPU, is in for frequent frame-rate issues (as soon as units start appearing in hundreds on the battlefield). I've decided not to lower the over score because of this. It simply boils down to the fact that players will become hooked on Supreme Commander's fluent gameplay, without worrying about the game's overall appearance. Beside which, Supreme Commander features impressive looking explosions and highly detailed unit models, on top of a variety of additional visual effects. Aside from the steep hardware requirements that may cause a frame rate drop, the game really didn't put us through any other complication.

In truth, the slow opening of the game might discourage most players. Although the game does a really good job of tying in each of the campaigns, the storyline doesn't amount up to much. Still, that's not the point here. Once the game gets going, even with the mentioned drawbacks, it rarely gets dull and is guaranteed to please even the most demanding RTS enthusiast. The game also sports an outstanding soundtrack and superb sound effects to keep to going all the way. If the 20-30 hours of fun doesn't quench your thirst for conquering and massive battles, you can look forward to 40 maps in skirmish mode as well as an extremely entertaining multiplayer - with matches playable in LAN and Internet variants (you'll have fun in online matches to be sure... at least we did). Without even the slightest doubt, GPG and good old Christ Taylor made a spectacular RTS that should keep you occupied for weeks.
