Being a Morrowind veteran, I had very little trouble adjusting to the interface or the character progression system. Most of it is the same as in Morrowind, which is definitely a good thing. I played a Battle Mage with Mage talents, and the way I leveled my character was somewhat similar to how I leveled my Dark Elf in Morrowind. I'm a huge sucker for Destruction, Alteration, Mysticism, and Conjuration skills.

One thing I should note here also is that Bethesda has greatly improved on the "speechcrafting" by replacing the old random system with a more appropriate logics-based mini game. The lockpicking mini game has also received an overhaul. It's a lot more fun and intuitive on the PC.

Oh yeah, and did I mention you have a mount now, so actually exploring the terrain will be that much easier?

In regards to the itemization, I was rather dishearten by the fact that in Morrowind you would get some uber-epix-powerful items by raiding somewhat attainable dungeons, making the main story a lot easier to complete. Sadly, Bethesda has gone a bit overboard this time around, but in the opposite direction. So you'll have to spend a lot of time and go through a lot of trouble to get some uber gear early in the game. The problem with this is that even well into the game the situation doesn't improve too much. Well, until you've come to some of the key points in the campaign.

In summary, even though Oblivion might hurt your PC in ways it hasn't been hurt or overheated before, and barring certain technical drawbacks, (one of which would be an occasional AI quirk from the friendly NPCs or a rough-around-the-edges side quest line), Bethesda just pushes the bar in every possible way. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a game well worth your money. It is a unique experience that doesn't come by very often in this industry of ours. Be sure to cherish it and enjoy it for all its worth.

Nice review. I'd say the game also deserves mention for it's ability to scale itself down to lesser machines. I'm running my 3-year-old ATI 9800 All-In-Wonder, and I can hold a respectable 40-50FPS on "medium" settings with a 1024x768 resolution. Aside from the fact that I'm quite sure the game has literally cooked said video card, of course (I'm not kidding. I'm getting interference lines and arctifacts out the wazoo on the Windows desktop.).

As for the game itself, the only thing that really annoys me is the menu system. Morrowind had nice, transparent inventory screens where you could pretty much see everything you had at once. For Oblivion to restrict you to viewing six items/spells/whatever at once is a bit disappointing. I hate to break out the "consolization" sticker, but I can't really see why else they would go from a mouse-driven menu system to one that can be completely navigated with the arrow keys. I'm sure my gripes will settle down, and they're pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, but they're gripes nonetheless.

I've been with the Elder Scrolls series since Arena - to the tune that I actually bought it at full price when it first came out, since I was one of the few and proud with a CD ROM at the time (Yes, the tech was still new back then). I've noticed one very peculiar thing about the series as it progressed; the world's actually gotten _Smaller_. In Arena, you played in the whole freaking world. In Daggerfall, you were mostly confined to High Rock, but the game created towns and dungeons on the fly. In Morrowind, you were in Vardenfell originally - though the expansions, well, expanded things to much of the rest of Morrowind. Oblivion seems, geographically, the smallest of the lot - but at the same time, it's the most concise. There's alot cleaner a storyline, and the lay of the land is alot better defined.

I pretty much agree with everything 2lions wrote in the review. It's been almost a week know and I can't stay away from this game. Morrowind had its faults, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. As for Oblivion, the game is everything I hoped it would be and more. The only thing is that now I really, really, really, need more money so I can by myself a supreme rig. So, I'm gonna ask you guys to start making donations to Vadar's Oblivion Fund. Any takers?

I love the game, its pretty damn awesome. I hated Morrowind and thought it was garbage but I love Oblivion. It runs acceptable for my X800 system and even though I can't enable HDR I think the options it gives you is very well done. I agree with the review and in a way am sad to see a game like this come along at this time. I had a bit of other crap to play and now that I have another great game to play its hard to find the time and make the decision of playing one or the other.

I just managed to get a new semi-uber rig (it cost me dearly, not just with money) because my old one died. This is perfect timing. I'm hoping that I won't harm my X1800, because I don't have any more money left to spend if something goes wrong.
shadowwolf [mail] Mar 28 2006, 01:36 am EST
Your review was right on 2Lions. Also, it should be noted that stealth characters and especially marksman users are actually viable in combat now since you can run all the time without draining endurance when you are using a bow (if you have made atleast level 25 in marksman). If anything its almost too easy as a marksman now, unless you get stuck in a confined space.

As for the loot, I totally agree also. The rate at which any new weapon or armor, especially magic, drops is rediculous. I looked in the CS and found that the absolute best drop rate (for magic weapons and armor) that you can get in a dungeon is for the boss chests in mythic enemy lairs and they are only at 25% chance of getting anything and what you can get can be any magic item that is at your level or lower, so it could be a level 3 magic item when you are level 25 :(. And even the 25% is misleading as I have gone through 20+ dungeons and the boss chest has dropped no magic items at all. However, you can usually get some good stuff off human characters in the dungeons, especially boss characters as they almost always have a couple magic items, I just wish that the chest would offer more, being the boss chest and all.

The I want the most though, is a way to see corpses in the grass. I spend more time trying to find the corpse of the person than killing them :(.
Amok: Then lower the graphic details 'till grass isn't displayed =...

"Be sure to cherish it and enjoy it for all its worth." DAMN RIGHT !
Very well put 2L, i just got my copy yesterday (a curse on u vader for getting it faster) and i am having a blast !!! - WRONG ! no im not, im freakin broke and i cant buy a beter system for the damn game (OH THE IRONY OF IT ALL)

Fate has screwd with me again and has left me shalow and lifeless on the cold and icy ground.

Good review, I love this game so far!
Cheddar [mail] Mar 28 2006, 11:51 pm EST
My housemate's been playing the game on the Xbox 360. He has this to say:

"There is no heaven, there is only Oblivion."

Hur hur. Get it? See, it's a statement with parallel context. Intensely clever.
Vader [STAFF] [mail] Mar 31 2006, 07:34 am EST
So what he's trying to say is that when people die, they go to Oblivion (if they've lead a fair and just life, that is). Or is it that a portal to Oblivion opens and sends them to hell if they had a sinful life?

Hm, it's an interesting one to ponder at least.

Can anyone help me?!

I have a Pentium IV 3.2 GHz with 1 GB of RAM (2 x 512MB 400DDR PC3200), with a 256 MB ATI-SAPPHIRE RADEON 9550SE DDR graphics card. Is this decent enough to play this game? I want the game to look as good as possible, but at the moment it is slowing up when I move outdoors, especially when other NPC's approoach to engage in combat (indoors is fine, though!).

Is my graphics card the main thing that is limiting me?

What are the best game settings for me to use?
