World in Conflict simply has no flaws when it comes to graphics. Massive Entertainment's efforts are obvious in this matter. Everything you see on the battlefield, from the forests and buildings, to the highly-detailed units, looks amazing. Next to the meticulously designed environments and unit models, a lot of hard work clearly went into creating lifelike explosions. Additionally, thanks to the game's exceptional audio and first-rate voicovers, players are going to feel like they're in the middle of a real war zone. All that, for a real-time strategy. Nice work. Naturally, things will look even better if you are able to run the game in DX 10.
Both single-player and multiplayer maps were designed quite well, allowing players to use a multitude of strategies as they make the most of all of their units. For that matter, the game was designed in a way so players are going to feel the need to exploit the abilities of all units, including snipers, infantry, tanks, AA units, helicopters and so on.
Not all things are in place mind you. The game exhibited significant frame rate drops on larger maps, especially when numerous air and land units enter the fray. At times, the choppy frame rate may ensue even on high-end rigs. To enjoy a steady frame rate on mid-range systems, you're gonna have to reduce most of the effects and details to medium.
The AI puts up a decent fight and usually looks to destroy crucial units. For example, Russian forces frequently take out repair vehicles first, so you won't be able to patch up your units. On the other hand, I experienced a few pathfinding issues, but these were very isolated incidents.
Overall, World in Conflict deserves the attention of all gamers regardless of what their preferred genres are. There's enough action and content to guarantee hours of continuous fun, which stands for both single-player and multiplayer modes. The range of units and a vast number of air support that can be called in, makes for some exciting and well-balanced multiplayer battles. Also, it's easy to coordinate attacks with players via the built-in VOIP chat system. Even if you cannot enjoy this aspect of the game, playing without a headset is entertaining enough. Battles can last for hours, with a potential of reaching a climactic full-on nuclear blast (you can read more about the multiplayer aspect of the game in our aforementioned hands-on impressions).
So, the game comes highly recommended, in spite of a few technical glitches, which aren't going to get in the way of a great RTS experience.
![]() 9.1 Excellent Convincing story presentation and characters in single-player, addictive multiplayer, great visuals and audio, variety of units and options, well-designed maps; At times too demanding for your average rig, especially when playing larger maps, infrequent pathfinding issues; Russian campaign would've been great.
