The latest sales data from NPD Group indicates that "new launch performance"
went through a 99% decline during January 2012, as opposed to the same month
in 2011.
Of course, this might have a little something to do with the fact that this
was one of the 'deadest' Januaries for gamers, and probably one of the worst
post-Christmas dry seasons...

Paycheck just arrived and, boy, that just feels like somebody has just given
me the entire fucking world!!! Bloody economy. What's really fucked up is that
more than half of that money has to cover stuff like rent, bills, various monthly
expenses etc. FUCK!
The good news is, I managed to snatch enough cash for a distinctly geekish
purchase.

During Sony's Gamescom press conference, held today, Sony CEO Andrew House officially confirmed a global price decrease for the industry giant's console,
PlayStation 3. In other words, the system is now cheaper across Europe, Japan

According to the latest data released by NPD, US retail sales of games, consoles
and accessories dropped to their lowest total in almost 5 years during the pervious
month (thanks, GamaSutra).

THQ, unfortunately, had to cancel a number of online games, after a lousy financial
third quarter, which ended December 31, 2010. The company had a quarterly profit
of $542,000 last year, but has now experienced a loss of $14.9 million (holy
ass!)...

Apart from diving into the market of casual games, publishers have all sorts
of deviant little ways to pull in more resources - milking their popular franchises
being the most obvious way, of course. Beyond that there's the dreaded process

Times reports that for the second year in a row U.S. video game sales marked
a decline, down 5.7% to $18.6 billion in 2010 from $19.7 billion in 2009 and
$21.4 billion in 2008. The data was compiled by NPD Group.

Folks from the US aged eight and up have spent approximately $25.3 billion
on video games, according to consumer spending data from research firm Newzoo.
The survey -- focused on the year 2009 -- has shown that 46% of that budget goes to the used
game trade and online models including subscriptions, virtual currency, microtransactions

reports that, according to some of their sources, Take 2 Interactive is
preparing a restructuring effort that would "improve the company's finances."

I was just thinking about how amazingly well Activision is doing with Modern Warfare 2 and, as 2lions put it, it's a business more lucrative than dealing drugs. Seriously drug dealers would be far better off publishing video games than distributing various illegal substances...
